Flakes do not automatically mean your scalp needs more oil. Buildup from gels, grease, dry shampoo, sweat, and incomplete rinsing can sit around the roots and mimic dryness. The goal is to remove residue without turning the routine into an aggressive scrub.

Step 1: Loosen residue without scratching

Before washing, separate the hair into sections and use your fingertips—not your nails—to gently access the scalp. Skip harsh scraping tools and undiluted essential oils, which can make an already-sensitive scalp feel worse.

Step 2: Cleanse the scalp thoroughly

Apply a gentle shampoo directly to the scalp in sections. Massage lightly, rinse completely, and repeat only if the first cleanse did not remove the residue. Let the rinse water clean the hair lengths rather than roughing them up.

Step 3: Rehydrate lightly and observe

Condition the strands, keep heavy conditioner off the scalp unless the product is designed for it, and use minimal scalp product afterward. Pay attention to whether the flakes, tightness, or itching improve over the next several days.

If symptoms persist, become painful, or include open sores or sudden patchy loss, contact a dermatologist. For a complete routine and tracking framework, get The Scalp Recovery Blueprint.
